During his visit to the Netherlands, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, spotlighted Dutch healthcare innovation. In his keynote, he explicitly highlighted the collaboration between UMC Utrecht and ChipSoft as an inspiring example of how AI can genuinely ease the workload of healthcare professionals.
Nadella showcased the AI-powered generation of discharge letters in the cardiology department at UMC Utrecht. This AI solution, developed by Ilse Kant and Remco van Lunteren (both from UMC Utrecht), helps doctors draft medical documentation more quickly and efficiently while preserving professional oversight and quality. By making the code open source on GitHub, UMC Utrecht enables other healthcare institutions to benefit from it as well.
Thanks to the seamless integration of this AI module into our EHR HiX, physicians can use the AI feature directly while composing discharge letters, without extra steps or delays. Generating letters “on the fly” not only saves valuable time but also streamlines and clarifies the care process. Additionally, transparency is ensured: text generated by AI is clearly marked, and edits are automatically logged, creating valuable feedback for further AI prompt optimization.
By explicitly highlighting this innovation, Satya Nadella emphasizes the importance of partnership. Our long-standing strategic collaboration with Microsoft enables new technologies to be introduced into healthcare in a responsible and secure manner. We express deep gratitude for the cooperation with UMC Utrecht, Ilse Kant, and Remco van Lunteren, and pride in how this collaboration contributes to the advancement of healthcare.
